Thann Scoggin

Thann Scoggin’s musical journey has been as winding and far-reaching as his geographical one, but he wouldn’t have it any other way. Growing up on the high plains of the Texas Panhandle, Thann was fortunate to have a supportive musical family who encouraged him to follow his interests and to lean into the things that made him different. Although his voice was the instrument he began using the earliest, the electric guitar was the first musical outlet that inspired Thann to push himself, especially towards learning as many heavy metal riffs and solos as he could as a teenager. Then his mind was truly blown finding similar technical challenges learning a Bach motet for a state vocal competition…and the path was set.

He attended the University of North Texas to study vocal performance, and initially focused on opera, performing leading Mozart buffo roles in Italian. However, his deep love of singing choral and early music, and the colleagues he found in doing so (including fellow Tooth Cameron Beauchamp) led him to shift his focus. After graduate studies in voice, early music, and library science, he relocated to Boston. Since beginning his career in earnest in the Northeast, he has performed and recorded with leading ensembles across the US, including The Crossing, Conspirare, Handel & Haydn Society, Boston Baroque, Emmanuel Music, and True Concord.

Singing with Roomful of Teeth since 2015 has been Thann’s greatest musical joy. The group has allowed him to dig into some of the things he loves the most: collaborating with extraordinary people, nerding out about vocal technique, teaching, traveling, and making crazy sounds. When he’s not with the band, you will most likely find Thann outside. An avid hiker and outdoorsman, he has climbed over half of the 100 tallest peaks in Colorado and spends as much time in the mountain west as he can.
